Luka Doncic Set to Extend Contract with Los Angeles Lakers: A $228.6 Million Deal in the Making

Luka Doncic is expected to extend his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers during this upcoming offseason, according to Tim McMahon of ESPN. The 26-year-old star, who is set to earn $46 million next season, has a player option worth nearly $49 million.

Doncic could sign a four-year extension worth $228.6 million with the Lakers, securing his future with the team for the next several seasons. Since joining the Lakers mid-season, Doncic has quickly become a vital part of their lineup.

Over the 2024-2025 regular season and the playoffs, he played in 33 games, averaging an impressive 28.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game. Despite his standout performance, the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, falling 4-1 to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Doncic continued to shine, averaging 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists in 41.6 minutes per game during the postseason.

The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) limits supermax deals to players still under their rookie contracts or those traded during that time. With Doncic’s rookie contract expiring in 2022, he no longer qualifies for that lucrative option.

Nonetheless, Doncic still has several pathways to secure his financial future. Starting August 2, he can sign a contract extension with the Lakers, beginning at 30% of the salary cap with an 8% annual raise.

This deal could be worth up to $228.6 million through the 2029-2030 season—approximately $38.1 million less than what he could have earned in Dallas and nearly $117 million less than the supermax deal. One option for Doncic is to play out next season and opt out of his contract in 2026 to become a free agent.

This would give him the opportunity to sign a five-year deal with the Lakers worth $296 million, extending his contract through the 2030-2031 season. However, the most financially beneficial move for Doncic may be to sign a three-year extension this summer with a player option for the 2028-2029 season.

If he follows this route, his projected salary for the 2028-2029 season could reach $72 million, potentially leading to a five-year deal worth $418 million with the Lakers starting before the 2028-2029 season.
