Massimiliano Allegri’s dramatic return to AC Milan has captured headlines across Italy, but reports reveal that San Siro was not his first destination plan. The former Juventus manager was initially on the verge of joining Napoli this summer before a series of rapid developments changed the course of his future.

After parting ways with Juventus, Allegri became one of the most sought-after coaches in Serie A. Several top Italian clubs, including Napoli and Inter Milan, reportedly showed strong interest in securing his services for the 2025/26 season.

The Naples-based club had identified Allegri as the ideal replacement should Conte depart. Allegri’s proven track record, which includes multiple Serie A titles, made him a natural fit for Napoli's ambitions.

The agreement was nearly finalized, but things took a swift turn when Conte ultimately decided to stay. As a result, Napoli pulled out of talks with Allegri, leaving the experienced tactician momentarily without a club.

Inter Milan then emerged as another potential destination. With Simone Inzaghi's future uncertain ahead of the Champions League final, Inter kept Allegri in consideration.

However, their hesitation and lack of concrete offers created a window of opportunity for AC Milan.

The 2025/26 season will mark his second stint at the Rossoneri, with his first game scheduled in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal in late July. With Allegri back at San Siro, fans are eager to see how he reshapes Milan’s squad and leads them in a new chapter of Serie A competition.
