Xabi Alonso Appointed as Real Madrid Head Coach: Major Squad Overhaul Expected

Posted 1 week 4 days ago

Real Madrid has officially appointed club legend Xabi Alonso as their new head coach for the 2025/2026 season. Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who has taken over as the head coach of the Brazil national team.

The appointment signals a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu, with high hopes that Alonso can restore Los Blancos' dominance in European football. Alonso's success at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the German side to impressive finishes with dynamic, attacking football, made him an ideal candidate.

His return to Madrid—where he won multiple titles as a player—has been welcomed with excitement and anticipation. However, the Spanish tactician is expected to make bold changes, including a deep evaluation of the current squad and the possible departure of several key players.

The Brazilian forward has struggled to find his best form in recent seasons and was often deployed out of position as a false nine under Ancelotti. With Kylian Mbappe and Endrick joining the squad, Rodrygo's opportunities are expected to diminish.

Alonso, who favors a pure striker with sharp instincts, may push for a transfer, especially with top European clubs showing interest and Rodrygo’s market value nearing €80 million. Another player who could face the exit door is Ferland Mendy.

The left-back has been plagued by injuries, limiting his contribution to just 31 appearances last season. Although Mendy is contracted until 2028, Alonso may look to bring in a more physically reliable option, with names like Fran Garcia already being linked.

Strengthening the backline is seen as critical to Alonso’s vision for a more stable and aggressive defensive setup. Eduardo Camavinga’s future at Madrid is also under scrutiny.

Despite his high potential, the French midfielder has struggled with consistency. Alonso prioritizes midfielders with vision and tactical discipline—qualities Camavinga is yet to display consistently.

Given his age and current market value, Madrid could consider cashing in to fund reinforcements in midfield that align with Alonso’s strategic needs.

This change opens the door for promising youth players and new signings to step into the spotlight. While the transition will be challenging, Alonso's leadership may provide the balance between youthful energy and experienced depth needed to compete at the highest level in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
